Investing in Our Energy Future

Redwood Coast Energy Authority (RCEA) is a community-driven local government agency working to advance clean, reliable, and affordable energy solutions for Humboldt County.

As a customer, you pay RCEA for electricity generation. As your local not-for-profit, Community Choice Energy provider, we take that revenue and invest it back into the energy future of our community. Learn more below!

Our Commitments

Reducing Emissions

Shifting to clean, sustainable energy has never been more important—or more accessible. RCEA makes it possible for everyone to access cleaner electricity by sourcing power from local renewable resources like solar, wind, biomass, and small hydro. Customers can upgrade to 100% renewable energy service with REpower+!

RCEA set a goal to provide 100% renewable energy by 2030.
To do this, we are:

  • Expanding local solar and offshore wind projects
  • Supporting grid-scale energy storage
  • Securing more long-term renewable energy contracts
  • Continuing to invest in Humboldt County-based energy projects

Clean Transportation

Did you know that transportation is the largest source of greenhouse gas emissions in California? RCEA is working to increase accessibility of carbon-free transportation by offering Electric Vehicle (EV) rebates to residents and businesses, as well as building the Rural EV Charging Network or REVNet, the first and only publicly-owned, publicly available network of EV charging stations in the county!

Strengthening Rural Resilience

The Redwood Coast Airport Microgrid (RCAM) is the first 100% renewable, front-of-the-meter, multi-customer microgrid in California. RCAM delivers clean, 100% dispatchable renewable power to Humboldt County utility customers and provides critical energy resilience for the California Redwood Coast-Humboldt County Airport and the U.S. Coast Guard Air Station.

The microgrid helps to ensure that the airport can reliably serve more than 50,000 flights each year during emergency conditions, including commercial airline, private, and emergency medical flights. In 2023-2024, RCAM was on stand-by or delivering resilient power through two major earthquakes (6.4 and 7.0), at least 14 atmospheric river events, and a bomb cyclone.

As the first-of-its-kind project in California, RCAM serves as a role model for other communities across the state striving to green their energy supply and provide critical resilience in the face of climate change.
