Hydrogen Tools

Hydrogen Tools is a website that focuses on providing safety knowledge and hydrogen analysis tools. This site has a variety of resources for emergency responders, including Vehicle Emergency Response Guides, downloadable training materials, workshops, Hydrogen Best Practices, and Lessons Learned. You will need to make an account (email and password) to get full access to all the resources. Hydrogen Tools is maintained by the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, with funding from the U.S. Department of Energy.

California Fuel Cell Partnership – Emergency Responders

The Emergency Responders page of the California Fuel Cell Partnership website includes Vehicle Emergency Response Guides, diagrams of FCEV Safety Systems, and a link to a hydrogen equipment certification webinar.

National Fire Protection Association – Alternative Fuel Vehicle Safety Training

NFPA has an Alternative Fuel Vehicle Safety Training section with customized materials for Fire Service, EMS, Fire Investigation, Crash Reconstruction, and Tow and Salvage. The program covers electric, hybrid, fuel cell, and gaseous vehicles and consists of training videos, animations, simulations, data review questions, scenario rooms, 3D interactive environments, quick reference materials, and research.

Fuel Cell and Hydrogen Energy Association (FCHEA)

FCHEA is an association of companies and organizations that are taking the lead in “advancing innovative, clean, safe, and reliable energy technologies.” They do this through advocacy, industry feedback, and public education. Their resources includes factsheets and information about regulations, codes, and standards. They host a Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Safety site which includes an annual Hydrogen Safety Report and other technical resources.

National Alternative Fuels Training Consortium

The National Alternative Fuels Training Consortium offers an Alternative Fuel Vehicle First Responder Safety Training which covers biofuel, gaseous, hydrogen, and electric drive vehicles. The topics include key vehicle and fuel properties, vehicle components, vehicle identification, and first responder procedures. The electric drive vehicle training is an 8-hour online course that covers hybrid, PHEV, BEV, FCEV technology, and costs $29.

HyResponse

HyResponse is a European based website that offers an International Curriculum on Hydrogen Safety Training for First Responders (published in 2015) and Virtual Reality modules for various accident response situations.

Poster – Hydrogen Safety Tips for First Responders (PDF)

This quick reference poster for first responders created by the U.S. Dept of Energy H2 covers basics such as: How to detect H2, What are the behaviors of H2, How to identify vehicles carrying H2, and the Basics of H2 emergency response. The websites referenced in the poster are dated and now redirect to h2tools.org.
